BIOGRAPHY

I am an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy with a primary research and practice interest in global health. My research focuses on ethical aspects of engaging in global health endeavors not only in the educational realm such as International Service-Learning but also pertaining to the practice of global health.

I am privileged to have received a Fulbright Scholar grant, which I am currently fulfilling in Rwanda through teaching the pediatric content within the BSc PT curriculum at the University of Rwanda. This opportunity has been ideal for pairing multiple aspects of my experience and expertise: my service as the Co-director for PT Rwanda for Health Volunteer Overseas; my interest in health equity specifically pertaining to access to rehabilitation; my research interest in global health; and my clinical expertise and teaching experience in pediatrics.

As a sub-committee member of the education workgroup of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), I advocated for the inclusion of topics pertaining to persons with disabilities in the global health competency toolkit which is published as an online resource by CUGH and used by global health educators worldwide. In addition, as an internationally educated PT (IEPT), I have advocated to establish parity for licensed IEPTs to transfer their license to a different state in the US. This work led to my having a role as a core member of the Multicultural PT Catalyst Group.

I have also provided my service to Enablement Foundation, a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands which makes educational materials for community-based health workers in Africa. In June-July of 2024, I supported the University of West Indies as an external examiner for their graduating PT class of 2024. The experience in Jamaica as well as my current 10 month-long experience in Rwanda is enriching my understanding of the profession of PT outside of the U.S. not only from a clinical point of view but also through an academic and health systems lens. I am ever grateful for these experiences and opportunities.

STATEMENT

As a dedicated PT professional with a strong commitment to global health equity, I am honored to submit my candidacy for the role of Secretary of the Global Health Special Interest Group (GHSIG). Serving currently in this position as secretary of the GHSIG, I have had the privilege of collaborating with the GHSIG team to support our strategic plan. The knowledge, passion, and comradery of the team has been invaluable in bolstering my enthusiasm and improving my skills to serve in this role. In my role as secretary, I prioritize clear documentation, timely dissemination of information, and effective coordination of tasks within the SIG. I also assist with programming initiatives and CSM related activities.

My experience working outside of the U.S. has strengthened my commitment to advocate for strengthening the profession of PT and to contribute meaningfully toward sustainable, inclusive, and evidence-based solutions. Continuing to serve in this role would support my growth and development in the field of global health through engagements and conversations with not only the leadership team of the GHSIG but also its members. I am also eager to share what I have learned and experienced with the goal of supporting tangible long-term global relationships.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to support and grow the SIG’s impact through strong organizational leadership. I have witnessed the work of the GHSIG over the last three years and I am very excited to continue to support this work on a larger scale as we envision strengthening relationships with our membership as well as supporting the goal of health equity for all.
